Nemo Ocean Warrior

Hi my name is Nicky Smedley, I live in Hull East Yorkshire, not a place you'd associate with someone who is passionate about the ocean living I know but I am very passionate and I want to pass it on. More people need to be aware of what is happening to the planet we call home, EARTH.

My aim is to increase people's awareness of the dangers of plastic and other items we just throw away. 71% of this planet is ocean, that makes up 96.5% of all earths water. If we don't do something there is not going to be an earth for our children.

I'm working within schools and the community in Hull to raise awareness of what is happening, even if I can just get a few people to change their habits, like using re-usable bottles instead of plastic bottles then the message is getting out there.

I would love for you all to come on this journey with me to making this planet a better place.

Feel free to dive in.

One of the things we need to remember about the ocean is that not all the creatures who rely on it live in it. There are multiple birds who need the ocean to survive, due to pollution and climate change these birds numbers are declining.
The Puffin is one of these birds. Their nesting habitat's are decreasing and they are having to travel further out to sea to find food. In the UK there are now only 580,000 breeding pairs and they can only be found in 11 sites around the UK.
There at also the creatures that live on the foreshore. You've got seals, otters, sandhoppers, crabs and razorshells to name a few. Recently a lot of areas have started regular beach cleans. I find this scary that they've had to start doing this, although a huge amount of this waste is left by people, it is also coming in from the ocean. Makes you wonder how much rubbish is floating out there doesn't it.
Living in Yorkshire makes us very lucky, we have brilliant places where we can visit to see the ocean and it's wildlife. Looking for something to do visit Spurn Point to see the power of the waves or Bempton Cliffs and Flambrough Head to see the wildlife.
